Maria Costello (Dalomba) of Milford, MA, passed away due to a brief illness peacefully in her sleep on Sunday December 8th with her beloved Gary by her side. She was the most kind and loving wife, mother and friend; she was also the strongest willed, determined and downright stubborn person one could have possibly met. She was also mischievous and silly.
Born in Brava, Cape Verde on May 11th, 1940. At ten years old she came to the United States on a boat she said was “too small to make the journey.” Her mother had worked hard and sacrificed so much to bring her family here, including a separation that spanned years.
One of Maria’s happiest memories was being reunited with her mother. She would often tell the story of running across Grand Central Station to her mom’s embrace . Her eyes would light up when talking about all the presents. The heights of her joy pales in comparison to the tremendous loss of her mom far too soon.
Maria welcomed new adventures, experiences and occasionally the unknown, always confident in her ability to figure it all out. Early in her professional life, she interviewed for a secretarial job; however Hasbro needed a bookkeeper. That didn’t stop her. She said she could do it though she didn’t really know what “it” entailed. She figured it out, of course and made a career for herself. Bookkeeping was her go to sundowning task (from mild dementia); even as her mind entered its golden hour she wanted to make sure everything she needed to take care of was complete. Her dedication was also given to her family and her faith, showing her love and devotion by being involved with the church as long as she was able. She touched the lives of countless people. All for the better.
Maria is survived by her husband Gary, daughter Stephanie. Her brothers John Dalomba and his wife, Linda. Julio “Juke” Dalomba and his wife Beckie, brother Virgilio. And her much loved and very spoiled cat, Professor Cuddles. She is preceded in death by her best friend and sister-in-law Becky Dalomba.
